The statue of Saint Fermin Holding His Head is dated from 1225-75 and was made in Amiens, France.

According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art:

“Saint Firmin was a fourth-century missionary who became the first bishop of Amiens and the patron saint of that city. Here the saint is shown as if living while holding his decapitated head. This statue is said to have come from the destroyed bishop’s palace at Amiens.”

Saint Fermin is the co-patron of Navarra, in Spain. The Festival of San Fermín is celebrated with the annual running of the bulls in Pamplona.
