Sisig is always good

With origins as a method of getting rid of the rest of the pig that wasn’t used to make a variety of other dishes, the iconic sisig is something that can be found at most Filipino restaurants. A sizzling plate of chopped up pig face and ears, with some hot chilies thrown in to give it a spicy flavor, the meal is one of the best representations of “comfort food.”

The dish probably isn’t the healthiest one to pick from, but it is one that has to be tried when in the Philippines – one of those dishes to have people try first before telling them it’s a sizzling plate of pig face.

Everything from crispy to chewy to rich, it’s a tasty adventure and, somehow, it always tastes good no matter where you order it from.

One of the best things about New York City’s Chinatown is the availability of delicious and cheap eats at every corner. While it seems more and more shops offering trendy Asian-inspired treats are popping up throughout the city, selling everything from bubble tea to specialty dumplings, it’s still a different experience wandering the winding streets of lower Manhattan to find meals that can be both unique and classic.

On this particular day, stopped into one of those spots that seems to carry a similar menu as any other place in Chinatown, but still will whip up a delicious plate of whatever is ordered. Can’t really go wrong with char siu and rice, really, anything “on rice” is really good, but that roast pork that nearly every Chinese restaurant has hanging in their windows – can probably eat that for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and probably have at some point).

Since the char siu already prepared, just waiting to be sliced, it comes very quick to the table, the rice is hot, the vegetables are getting to a nice temperature sitting between the rice and the sliced pork, and the pork is, as always, amazing – the delicious sweet glaze tops everything off.

While it may be nothing out of the ordinary, sometimes sitting down to one of those “on rice” meals is what hits the spot, and you’re usually only paying $4 or $6 for a hearty plate of food.

Dongpo Pork of Hangzhou

As part of a tour of the city of Hangzhou, by the time lunch rolled around, the tour stopped by a small restaurant. The restaurant defined quaint, it was like walking into your grandmother’s house. Dining was either outside or in individual rooms and service was provided by an older lady, fitting with the grandmother theme of the restaurant.

A variety of dishes were provided, from a simple egg dish to a potato entrée, all of it delicious. One of the highlights was the dongpo pork, which the tour guide noted is a Hangzhou delicacy. A piece of delectable pork belly, braised, then stewed; it leaves you with a tender piece of pork, swimming in a thick gravy. The slow-cooking brings a rich flavor with every bite of the meat.

The pork is definitely something to try if ever in the area.

It is likely one would never think of stopping by a restaurant like this, or even noticing it, without the help of a local or an experience tour guide. Not one to usually take guided tours, but finding these hidden gems is, clearly, a huge benefit.
