Layover

leave a comment »

Flying from New Bern, North Carolina to Newark, New Jersey, the first scheduled stop was a two-hour layover in Charlotte, North Carolina. Having stopped over at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) on a previous occasion, remembered there being a Bojangles franchise in one of the terminals; was looking forward to stopping by for breakfast.

Arrived in Terminal E, with a connection in Terminal D, kept an eye out for the famed chicken spot – but, unfortunately, failed to spot it (if it’s still there). Still looking for a place to eat, the Rum Bar and Grill was right outside the boarding gate. Perused the breakfast menu and went right to their breakfast cubano sandwich.

The meal was served pretty quickly – a good thing for travelers on the go – and it was beautiful. It was a large sandwich with the traditional ingredients of a cubano sandwich, but with the addition of eggs. Everything was so flavorful, along with a side of really well-cooked potato wedges – it was a great substitute for the initial plans for the two-hour stop.

Bear Towne Java

Spent Sunday morning strolling the charming streets of New Bern, North Carolina and found a spot for a morning cup, Bear Towne Java. Perused the menu and picked out a flavored latte, took a while to figure out exactly what flavor, given the numerous options the shop had posted. Given the proximity to Halloween and Thanksgiving, went with gingerbread.

As a first visit to the shop – the first time in New Bern – only getting acquainted with the town, but saw a note indicating the shop was closing on November 1st; including encouragement for regulars to “stop by on Friday Oct. 30 from 5:30 – 7:30 and enjoy a cup of coffee on us and maybe share a memory or two.”

The establishment has been around since 2003.

While it is unclear who is coming into the space, it is always emotional seeing a local coffeeshop go by the wayside – even if it was the first time setting foot into the place.

All the best to all those connected to Bear Towne Java, if the smiles and friendly service received on this first visit is reflective of how they run their business, it’s clear it is will be a missed spot in town.

Not Just a Rice Krispies Treat

After multiple visits to Wilmington, North Carolina, if there’s anything that is a constant, it’s a visit to Kilwins. Whether it’s the ice cream or the amazing fudge, took a step to the right and browsed the chocolate section – the expansive chocolate section. It took a while to make a decision, with so many delectable options; Kilwins makes it very difficult to make a choice.

Narrowed it down to one of their homemade peanut butter cups or a chocolate covered rice krispies treat – got one of each. The rice krispies treats was amazing, it was soft and the chocolate coating was a great addition to the classic treat. Even picking up the treat, there was still a choice between white, milk, and dark chocolate – with or without sprinkles – again, Kilwins makes the decision-making process difficult.

…and there are still a multitude of options whenever the next visit will be.

Beach Park

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the shabby Carolina Beach Amusement Park attractions all seemed in tact and collected in a lot, still waiting for a return to operation after the storm. The colorful ticket booth was one of the most attractive features on display that morning.

Tickets for rides are $1.50 each (rides cost two to three tickets each)
