Arts Centre Melbourne Spire

leave a comment »

A second generation spire, the 162-meter structure sits atop the Arts Centre Melbourne. The original spire was completed in 1981 and stood 115 meters; it was replaced by the current structure in 1996 after signs of deterioration on the original structure became very prominent.

The shape of the spire is inspired by a ballerina’s tutu and the Eiffel Tower.

On New Years 2012, the tower caught fire after fireworks improperly discharged.
