In 1854, Thomas Aitken founded Victoria Bitter because, according to their website, he was “dismayed by the quality of beers on offer in Australia.” Before 2012, VB held the highest market share of beer sold in Australia; they were overtaken in 2012 by Queensland brewer XXXX Gold.

VB is also known for its unique bottle. According to VB, “it’s a practical shape with no frills, just like its drinkers” and, along with that, the shorter neck allows the beer to maintain its freshness because there is less space for air.

In 2009, alcohol content was dropped from 4.9% to 4.6%, in 2012, the brewery increased it back to its original strength.
