Born in 1857, this wine was developed by German company H. Sichel Söhne, which later became one of the largest wine brands in the world. Starting as primarily a Liebfraumilch producer, the company has diversified into other types.

The Post-World War II saw the company’s popularity grow in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The company became the butt of jokes (considered a snob wine) — particularly, with the English — and sales plummeted. In the 70s, the company sold cases in the millions, by the 90s, they were selling fewer than 100,000 cases.

In 2009, Blue Nun launched Blue Nun Gold, a sparkling white win with 22-carat gold flakes.

The company has recently reinvented itself as a "contemporary" wine and has even won the endorsement of Victoria Beckham.
