A view of the Washington Monument from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. With the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in foreground, it provides a magnificent reproduction of the monument and a cloud-laden sky.

The monument has been closed indefinitely due to structural damage from an earthquake on August 23, 2011.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the shabby Carolina Beach Amusement Park attractions all seemed in tact and collected in a lot, still waiting for a return to operation after the storm. The colorful ticket booth was one of the most attractive features on display that morning.

Tickets for rides are $1.50 each (rides cost two to three tickets each)

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
